The Louisville Caverns, sometimes referred to as the Mega Caverns, are situated just inside the first of Louisville's expressways. While once far outside of the city, the urban sprawl has since enveloped the area and now it has turned into an attraction of sorts for people looking for something to do on a weekend. The entrance to the caverns has been dug out on a slope and what was once the limestone quarry for the majority of the city has been turned into a number of tourist attractions and a storage facility for people looking to have some privacy from others for where their things are being left out of site and out of mind.
Consisting of miles of caverns dug at specific angles and patterns that in no way resemble a natural shape and a ground that has had a grooved pattern carved into over and over again to allow for vehicle traffic. Inside there are the worlds largest underground zip line course as well as an active quarry that doesn't produce nearly once it once did and one of the largest storage container holding places in the country. Additionally, every winter they fill the normal public spaces with Christmas Lights to put on the largest Christmas Lights demonstration in the region and the lines to get it require people to sit in their cars for hours upon hours just for the chance to drive into the caverns themselves.
A true sign of the ways in which the modern world erases the past, what began as a quarry so that the city could be built up was turned into a massive storage facility which in turn has been turned into a tourist attraction; anything to keep enough money coming in that it stays in business and the space isn't being wasted. Much like the rest of the city, progress and finding anything that can be done to turn a profit matter more than actually thinking things through to their end result. When the caverns were first being carved, nobody considered that the city would expand beyond that point. When it was turned into storage spaces nobody considered that prices for renting that space that close to town would become more expensive. When it was a storage center nobody considered that, while an underground zip line sounds like a great idea, the fact that you can't see anything really does limit the "cool" factor of the zip lines themselves. Still, always evolve and change to find some way to keep the lights on and the money coming in.
