If a city is a living thing, and many say that they are, then 4th Street Live is the pulsing heart of Louisville. First opened a little over a decade ago, the concept was simple: permanently shut down down 4th street for a block and turn an entire downtown block into a party place for adults. Now filled with every big box "party" place you can imagine, from Hard Rock Cafe to a T.G.I. Fridays, the city has been fighting hard to reestablish its identity in the place. The addition of a bowling alley and a number of bars and nightclubs have helped, but as the saying goes, "Money Talks."
The end result has been a place where, during the week, it almost seems like a ghost town, but suddenly on Friday and Saturday nights, if the weather is warm, a seething mass of humanity comes rolling in and begins eating and drinking well beyond the point of excess. Additionally, in an effort to keep their money cow going, the various businesses will sometimes even block off the closed street to foot traffic and host concerts in the middle of all of the businesses. All kinds of acts, from Kid Rock to Justin Bieber have played in the street to sold out crowds, partiers, and alcoholics.
This is the place more than any other that shows the dichotomy of life within a city. Deserted in the mornings, businesses pick up around lunch time as all of the office workers are trying to find a place to eat. Then it becomes a ghost town again, full of the homeless trying to find a quick drink of water or place to sit down for a while. In the evenings, it is either controlled by the homeless or by an endless teem of middle and upper class people attempting to find some spark of life in their otherwise routine lives; depending on the day of the week and if someone is having a show that night.
