It is good to be the King. At least, that’s how the saying goes, and from all perspectives that saying is true. The only problem is, when you’re not the king, life really isn’t that much of a pleasant experience. There are many within the Garou Nation that believe that all Silver Fangs believe themselves to be kings, or lords, or nobles, or something which places them above the others around them. Granted, that reputation is well earned in some parts of the world. However, those aren’t necessarily true of the Bloodied Hunting Ground Protectorate. Here, not even the King is really a King.
There are very few Silver Fangs that are left in the area, when you consider that it is their protectorate. Yes, there is a King of the protectorate. Yes, he demands that every one of his titles be used when speaking to him. Yes, he is a strict traditionalist, and so are all others that wish to live within his protectorate. However, his protectorate is on the border of a place known to be a breeding ground for fomori. There is much recognition within the Tribe and within the Nation for maintaining such a territory. However, at the same time, it is very costly; both in supplies and in manpower.
It is said that the Silver Fangs are the lords of the protectorate in name only, and that the Fianna are the real power. From a day to day basis, that is certainly true. It is rare that any of the Silver Fangs who have gained rank are anywhere near the protectorate. Usually, they are around at least once every three or four lunar cycles, though. In fact, except for the yearly Grand Moot that is called, there is never a single point in time that every Silver Fang member of the protectorate is present. This is because the entire tribe is constantly sending representatives to the North Country Protectorate to curry the favor of King Albrecht and his lords.
This means that the kinfolk of the Silver Fangs are often left to their own devices, without Garou who are present to lord over their every action and whim every day. On the other hand, they don’t have Garou who are present to protect them every day. It is a trade off that the tribe must deal with, although it is one that the Fianna have been more than willing to assist them with, for which the Silver Fangs are very grateful. The largest and most prominent family of the Silver Fangs in the region are the Kincaids, although there are a few others that have risen to prominence for periods of time before dwindling out of favor again. It is still the Kincaids that the Winslows, the Monrningkills, the Babbages, and the other prominent Alpha Tribe families in the country recognizes as being the leaders of the protectorate.
There are few tribes that are strong enough within the region to really stand on their own without a political alliance. The Silver Fangs are one of them, even though they lack the numbers, the skill, the cunning, the supplies, or the ability to stand on their own. Anyone who understands the manner in which the Garou Nation works will tell you the answer, though… It is one thing to say that the Silver Fangs stand on their own. It is something else to risk the ire of an individual that is prophesied to be the Last Gaian King. None are willing to risk what will happen if they were to actually attempt to overthrow the Silver Fangs and risk the entirety of House Wyrmfoe of the Silver Fangs coming crashing down upon their heads. Discretion is the better part of valor, and the enemies of the Silver Fangs are aware of that.
This doesn’t mean that all Silver Fangs receive the protection of House Wyrmfoe, however. As if often the case, each of the noble houses are expected to look after their own, and as many members of Unbreakable Hearth have learned when they travelled South to the Bloodied Hunting Ground Protectorate, these are not Hearth lands. Members of other Silver Fang Houses are watched with suspicion at best and open hostility at least by the local Silver Fangs. Unless they were invited for a temporary visit for some purpose, they are seen as another House inserting itself into Wyrmfoe business, and that is tolerated about as well as another tribe attempting to seize control.
