The Silent Striders are a little bit of a conundrum within the Bloodied Hunting Ground Protectorate, as they are one of three tribes that seem to violate the very simple rule that has been established since the dawn of time, and to which every Garou find themselves instinctively aware; do not stand alone. That isn’t to say that all the Silent Striders are lone-wolves, quite contrary in fact as they work in packs just as much as any other Garou. But they are one of only three tribes that have not developed an alliance which allows them to continue to be a political force within the region. While the Silver Fangs can stand on their own because of the threat of political power from outside the region, the Silent Striders manage to do it because of a much more intriguing status that they hold. They fulfill a critical role within the local political structure which at the same time has made them invaluable to everyone within the area but has also made them subservient to just about everyone in the area.
As a tribe of wanderers, it has traditionally been the role of the Silent Striders to carry messages among the Garou Nation. To that end, the Silent Striders that have sworn themselves to the protectorate are given a special status which allows them to be welcome within any of the four septs in the protectorate. However, they are expected to maintain their political neutrality within the protectorate. As soon as any member of the tribe sacrifices their neutrality, they find themselves standing only with their personal allies, as the tribe itself will abandon their efforts to keep the peace with the other tribes.
There is only one exception to this status, and that is Ash Stepper. The aging Silent Strider has found himself in charge of an entire caern within the protectorate. However, he has done so primarily upon his own merit, and continues to maintain the peace with the others in the protectorate for seeming to judge his own tribe even more harshly than he does the other tribes. After all, it wouldn’t do anyone much benefit for the only caern that the Silent Striders control in the region to be lost because its Alpha has angered other tribal leader over protecting a cliaths who is accused of an infraction of some kind. The other Silent Striders in the region are aware of this and will often go to great lengths to spread the word of any punishments that Ash Stepper has passed upon them to make sure that all the other Garou within the protectorate understand that he isn’t playing favorites.
The kinfolk of the Silent Striders are spread far and wide within the protectorate. While they are not present in the same numbers as the Bone Gnawers or the Fianna, nor are they as distinct and easily recognizable as those of the Silver Fangs, Uktena, or Shadow Lords, they are none the less present. The vast majority of them tend to spread out across the entire territory, constituting a vast network of eyes and ears that assist in reporting to their Garou brethren so that the tribe may continue to serve in its role as the keepers of information and the spreaders of the news. When it comes to marriages, matings, and the like, there is a simple rule that all Silent Striders are expected to follow which comes to them from the days prior to their arrival in North America. The highest ranking must be notified, and it is his right to give the bride away and choose the location for the wedding, and all Silent Striders must be present for the ceremony. While the exact reasons for the traditions have been lost to the tribe that constantly roams, they haven’t broken this tradition once, and it would be a reckless Garou who decided they were going to be the first to do so.
The Silent Striders were considered to be the omen bringers and those who only arrived at the caerns to bring ill tidings prior to the Children of Gaia’s Folly. However, during the battles that raged across the Southern border of the protectorate, it was the Silent Striders who organized all the Septs and ran messages between them to help coordinate the response. They have gained the respect and trust of the other Garou, perhaps more so than they would be given in other areas of the world. Then again, respect always comes with a price.
