The local Uktena in the region are in a rather poor position these days. This land was never their land. It was always the land of Middle Brother, and only Middle Brother ever really knew its secrets. While there were small pockets that have always been under Uktena control, they were lost when the Wyrmbringers swept through and seized the ground that Middle Brother once held. This was followed by the great migrations west. Now, there frankly isn’t anything left of the Uktena that once used to inhabit the region. Sure, there are those who claim to have Shawnee, Cherokee, Chickasaw, or Yuchi blood in them. Those people are delusional, claiming something that is long gone to justify why they must buy the turquoise studded fake headdresses at truck stops.
However, the Uktena do have a rather high presence in the region, despite having been forced out of the area more than a hundred years ago. This primarily comes from the tribe’s willingness to breed with just about any non-European outsider. There are small pockets of individuals of African descent who were brought over to work the sugar fields in Haiti and the rest of the Caribbean that have made their way into the larger cities of Kentucky, and the number of the Uktena bearing Latino heritage has exploded over the past century. These new Uktena to the region lack much of the old ties to the land that their tribal ancestors once did, but they are coming in numbers that haven’t been seen in the region since Middle Brother ruled in the area.
Despite tribal claims to some areas of the protectorate, there is no actual claim that can be made by the present Uktena. They are outsiders in their own lands. This means that they, much like those in power within the region, were forced to seek out new friendships and alliances to find a toe-hold that they could build from. That’s when the Shadow Lords mysteriously seemed to show up. Together, the two tribes have combined their rather dismal territories to better protect their kinfolk while they combine their efforts in other areas as well. It is an agreement that the Uktena are not particularly pleased with and would much rather do without. However, as the saying goes, any port in a storm, and an agreement with the Shadow Lords is better than trying to stand on your own in a place like the Bloodied Hunting Grounds Protectorate.
The majority of the Uktena kinfolk in the region are immigrants or their descendants from Latin America. They moved North in order to find work, feed their families, have a place of their own, live a better life; take the excuse you like. Sure, the Garou may claim there was some higher purpose; reclaiming lost lore, reclaiming territory, seeking to spread the lost wisdom of the region. However, things are never really that glorious or honorable. The reality is probably a blend of following the kinfolk for their reasons and escaping the troubles from down in Mexico; gangs, organized crime, drugs, vampires. The usual kinds of things you don’t want your family growing up around. This does have its added advantages, however. Part of the agreement with the Shadow Lords was a defensive pact concerning kinfolk. With the Shadow Lords helping to watch after the kinfolk, this has opened up a number of opportunities for the Uktena to spend more and more time in their other pursuits. However, recently there has been some question about if a child was really Uktena kinfolk or not…
Things recently have taken a slightly dark turn for the Uktena in the region in recent months. With politics among the mortals being what they are, and the growing populations of the Uktena kinfolk in the region, both the mortals as well as some of the other tribes are starting to grow wary. To date there hasn’t been anything more than minor territory scuffles between the Garou tribes, but the mortals have begun to openly target areas in which the Uktena kinfolk call home. It is only a matter of time before this spills out into a much larger problem than anyone would like to see happen.
